Delaware rises on U-Haul's Top Growth States of 2023

Delaware made a list that may provide a glimpse into the state's direction of residential development: U-Haul's Top Growth States of 2023.

The moving company, which releases the list every year, calculates growth states by net gain or loss of one-way movers. Delaware ranked 15 on the list, making the top 20.

Delaware moved up 12 spots from the 2022 list to the 2023 list, making it one of the biggest climbers of the year. Last year, the first state was 27th place.

The growth index is made up of more than 2.5 million transactions going one-way, according to the company.

Texas made the number one spot for the sixth time in eight years, followed closely behind by Florida.

Delaware is one of the only Northeast states that made the top 20 of the list, joined by Vermont.

“Migration to states in the Southeast and Southwest is still very pronounced. Demand for one-way equipment out of certain markets in the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast mirrors what we have seen during recent moving cycles," said John 'J.T.' Taylor, the U-Haul International president.

Last place went to California, which also received 50th place in the 2022 list.

The top 20 list is as follows:

  1. Texas

  2. Florida

  3. North Carolina

  4. South Carolina

  5. Tennessee

  6. Idaho

  7. Washington

  8. Arizona

  9. Colorado

  10. Virginia
