Delaware Valley facing heavy rain, high winds with possible tornado Monday night

Wind, rain and maybe a tornado?

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch late Monday afternoon for eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and South Jersey with the approach of an evening warm front that could bring heavy rain, high winds and a possible tornado.

The notice covers the I-95 corridor in Pennsylvania, eastern New Jersey along the Delaware River and I-295 and other counties of Central New Jersey and Delaware.

"After 7 to 8 p.m. and peaking around midnight, there is a main threat of flash flooding, heavy rain, maybe some damaging winds with gusts up to 60 mph and a possible tornado," said Eric Hoeflich, a meteorologist in the NWS office in Mount Holly, which covers the Delaware Valley region.

The flood watch was issued at 3:40 p.m and remains in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Hoeflich said the warm front of a low pressure system was approaching from the southwest and in Virginia as of 4 p.m. was expected to move north. He said another frontal system coming from due west is likely to head more northward and miss the Delaware Valley.

At 4:19 p.m. a tornado warning was issued for several northern Virginia counties of Arlington and Fairfax near Washington, D.C.

Hoeflich urged the public to visit the NWS Facebook page or Twitter for further updates.
