Delay of game: Mitchell High School football field renovation project delayed

Originally scheduled for be ready for the first home game on Aug. 19 against Edgewood, the unveiling of the new turf Mitchell High School football field has been delayed.

Renovations at Terry Cole Field are largely complete, however labor shortage issues with the manufacturing company have led to the delivery of the turf being delayed until the week of Aug. 15, according to Mitchell Community Schools superintendent Brent Comer.

Upon delivery, installing the turf is anticipated to be two week project.

The work is expected to be completed ahead of the Sept. 16 matchup against conference opponents Crawford County, which would be the first home game played on the new field, Comer said.

"We're ready to lay the turf. We've done all the other necessary stuff that goes along with the 90% of the work to get it ready. That's been done for for some time now. And we're just literally waiting for the turf to be delivered and their team to install it. So, that's it and it's frustrating, but I think it's just a current reflection of everywhere in America right now," said Comer.

Entering his first season as the Mitchell varsity football coach, Kevin Kling said he is looking forward to being able to share the new field with the community.

"It's exciting, It really is," Kling said.

"The community has been great, to be able to reach out and allow us to have this. And, it's like I tell our kids, anything that's going to be really, really good and really, really nice, it'll be worth the wait. You know, we just have to be patient and handle the adversity and keep playing. That's all we can do," he continued.

The lack of home field availability will force the Bluejackets to play its first four scheduled games on the road, though three of those were already set to be away games. Only the season-opening game against Edgewood has been shifted.

Because of these delays, the Aug. 12 scrimmage against Bedford North Lawrence High School will now take place at BNL.
