Delays expected as more work begins on I-59 north of Fort Payne

Drivers heading back to the Gadsden area on Interstate 59 from Tennessee or Georgia can expect lane closures and delays beginning Monday, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation.

A.G. Peltz Group, a contractor, is set to repair concrete slabs on the southbound side of the roadway from north of Hammondville to Fort Payne, according to a news release from ALDOT’s Huntsville office. Those repairs are in preparation for all interstate traffic to be shifted to the southbound side, while an 8-mile stretch of the northbound roadway, from mile markers 225 to 233, is removed and reconstructed.

Once the slab repair is finished, according to the release, Peltz will begin constructing temporary crossovers in the median to prepare for the traffic shift. After that, drivers should expect possible lane closures in each direction.

The northbound roadway replacement will cost $40.8 million and take about two years to complete, according to the release. Another 8-mile replacement on the interstate through Fort Payne was recently completed, and workers currently are reconstructing 11 miles of the interstate from north of Reece City to Collinsville.
