Delbert Hosemann has 10 times as much cash on hand as Chris McDaniel. See largest donors

With less than a month until they face off in the Republican primary for lieutenant governor, incumbent Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and challenging state Sen. Chris McDaniel filed their June campaign finance reports with the secretary of state.

Those reports showed Hosemann with a strong lead in both June fundraising and overall cash-on-hand, after the first-term lieutenant governor already came into the month with a big advantage. Both candidates spent more than they raised in July, as their heated primary enters the home stretch.

Hosemann reported raising about $548,000 in June — more than five times as much as McDaniel — while spending about $835,000. Hosemann spent nearly two and a half times as much money in the month of June as McDaniel reported having on hand. Disbursements included nearly $18,000 to the Country Club of Jackson for an event, $63,000 to an Alexandria, VA production and consulting agency and four separate charges from a New Albany company for advertising: two of nearly $188,000, one of $150,000 and one of about $59,000.

Hosemann's cash on hand sits at more than $3.4 million, down from about $3.7 million at the end of May, but still more than 10 times McDaniel's total. McDaniel reported raising about $98,000 in June, while spending more than $146,000. McDaniel's cash on hand sits at about $338,000, down from about $386,000 at the end of May.

Hosemann's donations

The biggest donor to Hosemann in June was MS Hills PAC, of Tupelo, which gave him $50,000. That political action committee has the stated mission "to support and educate the legislative leadership from the North Mississippi region, on matters of regional importance such as transportation, local government, public policy, and economic development." Hosemann gained support from the group despite living in Jackson.

Hosemann also garnered big donations from a number of other PACs, including $25,000 from MS Asphalt Contractor PAC, MS Associated Builders and Contractors PAC and MS Coalition for Progress PAC. His largest individual donor was Johnny McRight, of Greenville, who gave $25,000. RSLC Mississippi PAC, which is supported by the Republican State Leadership Committee, gave Hosemann $15,000.

Some of the notable figures to donate to Hosemann included New Orleans-based real estate developer, philanthropist and longtime ally of former President Donald Trump Joseph Canizaro, who gave $10,000. Canizaro had previously given $25,000 to the campaign of Republican Gov. Tate Reeves. Also giving Hosemann $10,000 in June was Hancock Whitney CEO John Hairston.

Hosemann continued his trend of receiving donations from members of the state senate, which the lieutenant governor presides over. Sen. Joel Carter, R-Gulfport, donated $5,000 to Hosemann from his campaign committee.

Hosemann's filing still did not include any donations from Friends of Mississippi Hospitals, a Political Action Committee Associated with the Mississippi Hospital Association. MHA President Tim Moore told Mississippi Today in May that the PAC would be donating $100,000 to Hosemann, as it faced criticism for a $250,000 donation to Presley, but it seems that donation had not occurred by the end of June.

McDaniel's donations

As for McDaniel, the firebrand state senator received a far larger portion of his support from small donations, including a $100 June donation to his campaign committee from himself. Since the start of the year, McDaniel has donated $43,600 to his own campaign.

McDaniel's largest donation came from William Bruce Prewett, of Southaven, to the tune of $25,000. Prewett is president of Prewett Services LLC. McDaniel also got a $10,000 donation from Steven Jackson, also of Southaven, who works at American Services LLP.

The largest non-individual donor to the McDaniel campaign in June was Southern Exteriors Fence Co. Inc., of Perkinston, which gave $1,650.

McDaniel's June filing was free of some, though not all, of the things that had drawn the attention of critics in past filings. It was the first he has filed since announcing his run for lieutenant governor that did not include donations made outside of the reporting window.

For example, his May report included three donations that were made in June. Those three June donations appear to be included in the most recent report as well. Since May, the McDaniel campaign has chosen to file its report through the Committee to Elect Chris McDaniel, but two months later the required statement of organization form for that committee still does not appear on the Secretary of State's website. That form is required to be filed with the secretary of state within 48 hours of receiving or spending more than $200.
