The Freeman Arts Pavilion has unveiled its first wave of headliners for its summer concert series, which will feature Darius Rucker, Styx, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and many more.

A crash involving a car and a school bus of children left one dead and several injured in Laurel on Monday afternoon, according to first responder emergency communications.
Delaware State Police have yet to release further details on the crash, other than to say it was fatal, but here's what we know.

Warming waters in the Atlantic Ocean are among the reasons much of the seafood caught off Maryland's coast is becoming more diverse.
White shrimp, which typically thrive in the Gulf of Mexico and south Atlantic Ocean, used to only venture as far north as North Carolina in any significant numbers. But as water temperatures rise off the coast of Maryland, shrimp have moved further north.
The downside is increasingly warmer water is contributing to sea level rise, ocean heat waves and coral bleaching.

Jay Copeland cracks top 14 on 'American Idol'
Despite showing out on Sunday, Salisbury native Jeremiah “Jay” Copeland came into Monday’s episode of “American Idol” fighting an uphill battle.
He didn’t get enough votes from America for his performance Sunday, so he found himself on the brink of elimination Monday on episode 13, as he was striving to crack the top 14.
Copeland narrowly survived after the judges saved him.

A seasonal seal colony potentially over a decade old off the coast of Lewes could be from where the latest uptick of rescued seal pups is originating.
Louis Armstrong, a 35-pound grey seal pup rescued from Assateague Island National Seashore on Feb. 26, is the latest to join the National Aquarium for rehabilitation. He was found stranded and dehydrated with wounds of unknown origin to his face and left flipper.
It is one of three maternally dependent seals admitted to the Animal Care and Rescue Center during the past year.

'Largest tax cut package in state history': Who will benefit from plan?
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and leaders in the legislature have reached a $1.86 billion agreement for tax relief over five years for retirees, small businesses and low-income families, officials announced Monday.
When combined with a recently enacted gas tax suspension, the governor's office said this legislative session will deliver nearly $2 billion in tax relief. The Republican governor called the bipartisan deal "the largest tax cut package in state history with major and long-overdue relief for Maryland’s retirees.”

The countdown is on for the Eastern Shore's bustling summer season.
And Ocean City has been racing against the clock to bring a big change to the police department in time for the yearly crowds of visitors to descend.
The passage of the Maryland Police Accountability Act of 2021 mandated most of the state’s law enforcement officers be equipped with body-worn cameras by July 2025. The Ocean City Police Department has worked since late summer to get ahead of the curve.

Jeremiah “Jay” Copeland's supporters finally will get to marvel at the singer with the golden voice when he debuts on episode five Monday evening, an “American Idol” spokesperson told Delmarva Now / The Daily Times.
But he almost missed it. The Salisbury University 2020 grad said he was skeptical weeks ago when he learned he was getting the chance to show off his vocal talent for the producers of the reality show.

Gas prices going up in Maryland
Marylanders are definitely feeling the pain at the pump as gas prices have soared past $4 a gallon, reaching record highs.
As of Tuesday morning, data from AAA shows Maryland's average price per gallon for regular unleaded gas sits at $4.19 — above the national average of $4.17 per gallon.
These state and national averages have broken previous records set in 2008 around the Great Recession.

When it comes to “American Idol,” Jay isn’t the first person from Delmarva to compete on the program. Two former contestants have since relocated from the Eastern Shore — and turned their original music into a career in the process.

Another launch of the Antares rocket from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 19 means another opportunity to witness space travel.
Viewing locations on Chincoteague Island include Robert Reed Park on Main Street or Beach Road spanning the area between Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. The Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Atlantic beaches also provide good viewing locations.

Hogan discusses COVID-19, crime, tax relief in final state of the state address
For his final state of the state address, Gov. Larry Hogan touted his accomplishments over the years he served as governor, and once again has urged state lawmakers to pass legislation dealing with tax cuts and crime.
Hogan repeated Wednesday night much of what he has talked about throughout January: Maryland's response to the COVID-19 omicron variant, his "Re-Fund the Police" Initiative and his $4.6 billion tax relief package.

Town supports families displaced by fire
The Rigbie apartment building on North Central Avenue in Laurel burned down, displacing 54 people. Since the blaze, a local nonprofit and the Laurel School District have stepped in to see to the needs of his family and the other families affected by the fire.
“The Laurel community came out in full force,” said school board member Josh Wharton.

Behind her home in Frankford, Delaware, Patty Gregorio, owner of Black Dog Pens, turns out pens, bottle openers, shaving sets, letter openers, bottle stoppers and key chains.
Making pens is therapeutic for Gregorio, exercising her mind as she recovers from a traumatic brain injury.
“Basically, it came out of trauma. Really, that’s how this all started,” Gregorio said.

What's the status of the new COVID testing site coming to TidalHealth?
TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury is one of more than a dozen Maryland hospitals selected by state officials as locations for new COVID-19 testing sites.
Plans are still being finalized in coordination with the state for the location, start date and times, according to the post, but the site is expected to be up and running in a week to 10 days.

Sea turtle population threatened as water temperatures dip
Colder temperatures in Delmarva waters is more than just a season trend, it is the reason for sea turtles to possibly wash onto shore in a state of shock.
Locations like the Virginia area of the Assateague Island National Seashore are particularly prone to species like green sea turtles washing onto the shore in such a state. Such an incident was posted on social media by the Assateague Island Alliance on Dec. 2.
Even in such a condition, the turtles may still be alive once they come out of the cold shock.

The Port of Salisbury Marina is one step closer to redevelopment.
On Monday, the Salisbury City Council approved a resolution authorizing Mayor Jake Day to enter a land disposition agreement with the Salisbury Development Group. This agreement sets the terms of the sale and redevelopment of the Port of Salisbury Marina.
The current plans for redevelopment include the construction of two apartment buildings, each at least five stories high.

A series of storms that began to roll through Thursday and were expected to continue through the weekend brought high winds and flooding to the area.
A coastal flood warning for Wicomico and Somerset counties remained in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday, with 2 to 4 feet of standing water possible in some places. Officials reminded drivers not to drive through flooded areas.

Michael DePalma is the only freshman on the Worcester Prep Mallards varsity golf team, and he's pulling his weight.
DePalma medaled twice during the season, including the ESIAC Quad matches, where he shot a 39 overall. Not bad for your first year. But now he's competing on a whole new level.

Ocean City businesses, reeling from two summers struggling to fill their worker ranks, are finally taking a collective breath after celebrating the Labor Day end to the summer season. But what awaits in summer 2022 is weighing on owners’ minds.
This year, employers found that to attract workers, they had to elevate pay rates far greater than the minimum wage for seasonal work. To retain them, businesses had to go even further, offering bonuses for both signing and staying on through the end of the season. Fighting through few J-1 student visa workers, lack of child care, extra unemployment and other pandemic-related impact on the workforce, businesses pushed through with fewer employees who often worked overtime.
