Delta Air Lines is offering 2024 solar eclipse flight from Austin to Detroit

Viewing a total solar eclipse is cool, but what if you could do it 30,000 feet in the air? Delta Air Lines has you covered.

“The April 8 eclipse is the last total eclipse we’ll see over North America until 2044,” said Warren Weston, Delta Air Lines Lead Meteorologist. “This eclipse will last more than twice as long as the one that occurred in 2017, and the path is nearly twice as wide.”

Where will the 'path of totality' flight go?

In a press release Monday, the airline provided details for its "path of totality" flight scheduled for Monday, April 8. Delta flight 1218 will depart from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport at 12:15 p.m. CT and land at Detroit Metropolitan Airport at 3:20 p.m. CT.

The times were selected specifically for the best view of the solar eclipse at its peak.

As with any flight, these times are subject to change due to weather conditions and air traffic control.

What kind of plane will be used?

Delta has chosen to use an A220-300 for the aircraft's extra-large windows.

“This flight is the result of significant collaboration and exemplifies the close teamwork Delta is known for — from selecting an aircraft with larger windows to determining the exact departure time from Austin and the experiences at the gate and in the air,” said Eric Beck, Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning. “Thanks to teams across the company, the idea of viewing a total eclipse from the air will become a reality for our customers.”
