Delta flight returns to gate, delayed after two passengers refuse to wear face masks

After two travelers refused to wear face masks, a Delta flight departing from Detroit Metro Airport had to turn around and head back to the gate.

Flight 1227, headed to Atlanta Thursday, experienced a delay after two customers refused to wear face masks.

According to a Delta statement, the plane "returned to the gate following two customers who were non-compliant with crew instructions. After a short delay, the aircraft departed to Atlanta."

Face masks, or appropriate coverings, are required for both customers and employees of Delta. This includes on board the aircraft as well as at the lobby check-in, Delta Sky Clubs, boarding gate areas and jet bridges.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian told "Today" Wednesday how the airline has been "steadily and rather aggressively" stepping up enforcement of its mask policy to keep crew and passengers safe during the pandemic.

"You cannot board a Delta plane unless you have a mask on,'' Bastian said. "If you board the plane and you insist on not wearing your mask, we will insist that you don't fly Delta into the future. We already have over 100 people we've put on that list."

It is also encouraged that people wear face masks in security lines, restrooms and other high-traffic areas.

Travelers with a unique mask requirement are asked to bring their own coverings that fit their needs. However, when it comes to health issues, Delta asks customers to reconsider taking a trip.

"Customers with health conditions or disabilities that explicitly prevent the wearing of a face covering or mask are strongly encouraged to reconsider travel or should be prepared to complete a ‘Clearance-to-Fly’ process prior to departure at the airport," according to Delta's website.

Travelers may receive suspended privileges if any false claims of disabilities or health conditions are made when it comes to wearing a mask.
