The delta variant now accounts for 83% of new COVID-19 cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“This is a dramatic increase,” Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, told the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions on Tuesday. “In some parts of the country, the percentage is even higher, particularly in areas of low vaccination rates.”

By early July, the CDC reported that the delta variant accounted for 58% of new cases.

The delta variant appears to be driving another coronavirus wave. In the last week, the seven-day average of confirmed COVID-19 cases has jumped 40% to 27,776, according to the CDC. Deaths have risen 37% to 218, and hospitalizations have risen 37% to 3,087.

The delta variant, which is believed to have originated in India, may be more than twice as infectious as the original virus, according to research from the United Kingdom.

Almost all recent cases have occurred among those who have not received a COVID-19 vaccine.

“There is a simple public message: Get vaccinated or get COVID,” Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director at the American Public Health Association, told the Washington Examiner recently.

Some hospitals are already feeling the strain. In Springfield, Missouri, health officials have submitted a request to the state government for funding to set up an alternate care site for COVID-19 patients. The “increase in severe illness is projected to outpace hospital capacity,” officials said in a statement. About 231 people are being treated for COVID-19 in Springfield-area hospitals.
