Here are the top five stories in Orlando today:

1. Legislation has advanced in Florida that would make it more difficult for people injured by medical providers to win compensation in court if the provider can attribute the harm to COVID-19. The bill comes as state leaders continue to play down the pandemic in public. The Florida Justice Association says the prior version of the bill has already prevented survivors of patients suffering from medical malpractice from bringing claims. (Florida Phoenix)

2. Winter in Florida: Local water parks will be closed over the next few days as Central Florida prepares to see its coldest temperatures of the season so far. Universal Orlando’s Volcano Bay is closed until Tuesday. Aquatica is set to reopen on Tuesday. Disney's Typhoon Lagoon will remain closed Monday and Tuesday. (Click Orlando)

3. Seminole County leaders said there are still high concentrations of COVID-19 in Altamonte Springs’ and Casselberry’s wastewater. However, the delta variant has disappeared from detection for the first time since July. (WFTV)

4. Lake County activated its cold weather shelters Monday and will do so again today. Trinity Assembly of God and LifePointe Church will open from 5 p.m. until 7 a.m. Masks are required and there will be COVID-19 screenings at each shelter as well as hepatitis A, flu, and COVID-19 vaccines. (WESH)

5. Florida Wildlife Hospital in Brevard County is struggling to get donors and volunteers. The hospital treated more than 6,000 patients in 2021. The hospital saw its donations drop by nearly 50% due to the pandemic and the experience has been the same at non-profits around the state, while demand surges. (Spectrum News 13)

Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera’s drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.

Betera is offering readers of the Daily a 15% discount on their first order: use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — you can try Betera here.
