Singer Demi Lovato has posted a TikTok video taking down unrealistic beauty standards, while apologising for her use of face-altering filters in the past. In the video, Demi adopts a skin-smoothing, nose-shrinking filter to show the difference that they can make and expressed her concerns about the impact that they can have, especially on teenagers.

Also uploading the video to Instagram, Demi captioned it "Open fully for a friendly reminder 💖💖💖". The clip shows her moving her head around with several poignant notes written over the top, including "Unrealistic beauty expectations with these filters got me like... these aren't my real eyes", "My skin is not this smooth" and "Wait do I need a smaller nose?".

She also opened up about her own journey with battling poor self-image and self-esteem struggles, confessing that she previously used filters on her own posts, writing, "Thank God I'm realising this now and I'm sorry for using them without realising how dangerous they were before". Demi also added, "Thank God these weren't around when I was 13 but also... how are teens supposed to learn to accept themselves with this sh*t?".

So far, her post has been liked over 154,000 times, showing it certainly resonates with many of her 99 million followers.

This is far from the first time Demi has used her platform to speak out against the pressures imposed by societal beauty "standards" either, and how they've impacted her life – back in September 2019, she posted a shot of herself in a bikini along with a candid caption, explaining that in the past she'd have likely edited out her cellulite.

"I’m just literally sooooo tired of being ashamed of my body, editing it (yes the other bikini pics were edited - and I hate that I did that but it’s the truth) so that others think I’m THEIR idea of what beautiful is, but it’s just not me," she wrote honestly. "This is what I got. I want this new chapter in my life to be about being authentic to who I am rather than trying to meet someone else’s standards. So here’s me, unashamed, unafraid and proud to own a body that has fought through so much and will continue to amaze me when I hopefully give birth one day."

Poor body image is just one of the topics Demi is set to discuss in an upcoming documentary about her life, Demi Lovato: Dancing With The Devil, in which she also shares her story of addiction. Scarily, her substance abuse saw Demi overdose and suffer from three strokes, a heart attack and brain damage that prevented her from being able to read or drive.

We love that Demi is using her platform for good and to raise awareness on issues that impact so many.
