Interested in filmmaking or broadband?

Health Action NM is hosting a Jobs of the Future in Filmmaking and Broadband session from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, at the Marshall Memorial Library, 110 S. Diamond Avenue in Deming, NM.

This is a free session for youth and young adults . Health Action NM will bring the latest information on jobs and share insider tips. Please come and join this free class. For more information, please contact Loren Schoonover at Schoonoverloren77@gmail.com.

Duck Days Barbecue

The First United Methodist Church, in keeping with tradition,  will be having its Duck Day BBQ from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 27church. The church is located at 1020 S. Granite Street (next to the swimming pool).

The meal includes smoked top sirloin, beans, coleslaw, fixings, roll/butter, and dessert.

This year’s event is carry-out only or delivery. Delivery is available within the Deming city limits by contacting the church at 575-546-2791 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Tickets are $10 per plate. Early sales of tickets are available at the church, Peppers, and Stagecoach Depot (114 S. Silver) or at the door. Early purchase is recommended.

Yvette Herrell visit

Come join Congresswoman Yvette Herrell and fellow Republicans for Taco Tuesday at 11 a.m. on Aug. 16, at the La Fonda Restaurant Banquet Room, 601 E. Pine St. in Deming, NM.

Crochet and quilt club

The Deming Senior Citizen’s Center will start a crochet and quilt club at the center located at 800 S. Granite Street.

If you are interested in joining these clubs, stop by the center between 10 and 11 a.m.

If card games are your pleasure, plan on joining the Canasta and Bridge clubs at the Deming Senior Center. Stop by at 1 p.m. on Thursdays to sign up and play.

Republican Party meets

The Republican Party of Luna County will meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 13 at the Baptist Church located at 206 West Pine St. in Deming.

Guest speaker will be Amy Barela, Republican Party of NM.  CD2 vice-chair.  Barela will be talking about volunteering.

Guests can enter the building at the back door from the rear parking lot. The public is invited. The party headquarters located at 112 E. Spruce St. is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday through Saturday. Please stop by to register to vote or have questions answered.

Public lands input meeting

A meeting for outdoor recreation on public lands will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 24 at D.H. Lescombes Winery and Tasting Room on NM Hwy. 549.

Here is a golden opportunity to meet and discuss outdoor recreation with like-minded individuals and those that are interested in the opportunity to create some tourism economy and diversify a potential revenue stream right here in Luna County.

With the abundance of public lands here, collectively, we can enhance Deming and Luna County by presenting our community as an outdoor destination. Join us for the event.

Fair royalty contestants

The Southwestern New Mexico State Fair Royalty Pageant Packets are now available at Circle S Western Emporium, Mimbres Valley Feed Store and Copper Kettle Coffee.

Girls in grades 1st-12th are invited to join the event.  There will be prizes awarded to all who enter.

There will be a mandatory meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24th at the fairgrounds in Building 2. Please bring your entry packet and your parent with you at this time.

Annual 4-H Chile Roast

It’s chile roasting season for the Luna County 4-H. Members will be roasting and selling green chile from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on August 20 and 21 at the Southwestern New Mexico State Fairgrounds (4300 Raymond Reed Blvd.). Make your pre-orders now by calling 575-546-8806.. Your choice of mild or hot chile will be roasted and sacked for $30.  A large sack of unroasted chile will be $40.

Duck parade sign-up

Applications are now being accepted for the Deming-Luna County Chamber of Commerce Tournament of Ducks Parade. This is the signature event of the 43rd annual Great American Duck Race, Aug. 26-28 in Deming, NM.

Registration forms can be found at www.demingduckrace.com. Deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, 2022.
