DWI Planning meets

The Luna County DWI Planning Council meets at noon on Wednesday, February 16, 2022. This is a hybrid meeting. The agenda, minutes and meeting link will be posted on the county website 72 hours prior to the meeting.

Republicans meet

The Luna County Republican Party will meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 12, in the Republican Party Headquarters located at 112 E. Pine St. in Deming. Guest speaker will be Audrey Trujillo, candidate for New Mexico Secretary of State.

The office of the Secretary of State is extremely important regarding election security. Trujillo will have open discussion and answer questions after her presentation.

The business part of the meeting will follow the presentation. The public is invited, bring a friend. The Republican Party meets on the second Saturday of each month.

CHANCES fundraiser

The Collaboration to Help Assure No Child is Exposed to Substances (CHANCES) will host a fundraising dinner, dance, and art auction at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Boogies Brewery and Distillery, at 2000 Friar Santa Maria Ave. SE.

CHANCES is a non-profit organization established to create a program that will reduce and hopefully eliminate the number of children exposed to alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs in Luna County, NM.

Proceeds from the event will benefit programs for CHANCES.

Democrats meet Feb. 15

The Luna County Democratic Party will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15, at La Fonda Restaurant, 601 E. Pine St. Delegates will be elected to the State Central Committee and the CD2 vice chair for the New Mexico Democratic Party, Steven Jones, will present on the redistricting map. Please join us.

Free COVID test kits

Luna County is offering free home COVID-19 test kits to our employees and the public. They are available for pick up from the security desk at the Luna County Courthouse at 700 S. Silver St.

State police checkpoints

The New Mexico State Police will be conducting sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and registration, insurance, and driver's license checkpoints in all New Mexico counties during the month of February 2022.

The NMSP is bringing awareness to these events to reduce alcohol related fatalities through continued media attention and intensive advertising. These checkpoints are helping to change society's attitude about drinking and driving.

Hundreds of lives could be saved each year if every driver had the courage to make the right decision not to drink and drive.

Luna County offices will be closed Monday, February 21, 2022 for President's Day.

Community Coalition meetings are at noon on the first Wednesday of each month at the La Fonda Restaurant, 601 E. Pine St. in Deming, NM.

Convenience Station hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

Art center fundraiser

Get your tickets now! The Deming Art Council is raffling a gorgeous horse-themed quilt that was donated by the Quilting Bee in Deming. Tickets are $1 each or a book of six for $5. You can purchase tickets from a DAC member or at the Deming Art Center, 100 S. Gold St.

The drawing will be at 3 p.m. on March 30, 2022 at the center. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the upkeep of the center and its programs.

Earn money for trash pickup

The Keep Luna County Beautiful program is accepting letters of interest from community organizations for Illegal dumping and trash pick-up events around Luna County. Organizations can earn funds for their group. Organizations must commit to participate at one illegal dump site pick up and the Great American Cleanup or Toss No Mas clean-up events in order to earn the $1,000, or participate in the Great American Cleanup or Toss No Mas events, as well as one regular community trash pick-up event to earn the $500.

Letter of interest should include a brief description of your organization, what the funds will be used for and who will benefit from the funds.

Persons with dementia are vulnerable to abuse, neglect and exploitation. Call the Adult Protective Services Statewide Intake at 1-866-654-3219 to report suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
