Art center closed

Due to recent COVID-19 cases, the Deming Arts Center located at 100 S. Gold Street, will be closed through July 23, 2022.  The Deming Art Council apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Democrats meet

The Democratic Party of Luna County will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26 at 6 pm at La Fonda Restaurant Banquet Room, 601 E. Pine St. in Deming, NM.

Candidates running for office will be present. An update on the opening of the party office will be provided. All are welcome. Be the change you want to see in our country.

Fair royalty packets

The Southwestern New Mexico State Fair Royalty Pageant Packets will be available beginning Friday, July 22, 2022 at the Circle S Western Emporium, Mimbres Valley Feed Store and Copper Kettle Coffee.

Girls in grades 1st-12th are invited to join the event.  There will be prizes awarded to all who enter.

There will be a mandatory meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24th at the fairgrounds in Building 2. Please bring your entry packet and your parent with you at this time.

I-10 road work

The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One office in cooperation with Mountain States Construction, Inc. (Contractor) are excited to announce the upcoming roadway rehabilitation project on Interstate 10 from milepost 75 (6 miles west of Deming) to milepost 84 (Deming).

Beginning Monday, July 18, 2022, drivers can expect various daytime lane closures on both the eastbound and westbound lanes as needed. Contractor’s hours of operation will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. This rehabilitation project was awarded in the amount if $14 million and is expected to take 120 working days to complete, weather pending.

Fort Seldon event

Fort Selden Historic Site (FSHS) will host “Summer Nights: A Night of Folklore,” a family-friendly evening brimming with food, crafts, live music, and maybe even an appearance from La Llorona herself. The program will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 23.

Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for watching the sunset. FSHS has extended its hours to 9 p.m. for this event.

4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.: Live Music with Derrick Lee and The Hard Road Trio

6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.: History of Urban Legends with Dr. Rhonda Dass

7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.: La Llorona: The Wailing Woman, presented by Rosalia Pacheco and the New Mexico Humanities Council

KLCB fundraising

Keep Luna County Beautiful is accepting letters of interest from youth oriented community organizations for Illegal dumping and litter pick-up events around Luna County. Organizations can earn funds for their youth oriented group.

Organizations must commit to participate at one illegal dump site pick up and the Great American Cleanup or Toss No Mas cleanup events in order to earn the $1,000, or participate in the Great American Cleanup or Toss No Mas events, as well as one regular community trash pick-up event to earn the $500.

Letter of interest should include a brief description of your organization, what the funds will be used for and who will benefit from the funds. Letters must be addressed to:

Duck parade sign-up

Applications are now being accepted for the Deming-Luna County Chamber of Commerce Tournament of Ducks Parade. This is the signature event of the 43rd annual Great American Duck Race, Aug. 26-28 in Deming, NM.

Registration forms can be found at www.demingduckrace.com. Deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, 2022.
