County meeting canceled
The monthly Luna County DWI Planning Council meeting previously scheduled for Wednesday, May 18, 2022 has been cancelled. Luna County's strategic planning session time and location will be available soon.
DHS athletic signing
Deming High School announces the official commitment/signing of student-athlete Bianca Valverde to Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, AZ. Bianca has received the official documentation necessary to play softball for the Gila Monsters.
DHS is excited for Bianca and her family and will have an official signing at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May, 19, 2022, in the main gym. Hope you can join us for this great event.
Rockhound Friends meet
The Friends of Rockhound State Park, Inc. will meet at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at the Rockhound Park Visitor Center. Guest speaker this month is Frank Bryce, retired U. S. Fish and Wildlife manager and president of the Humane Society of Southern New Mexico.
His presentation is about local reptiles and snakes. Coffee and donuts are provided and we always have door prizes. All are welcome.
Democrats meet
The Democratic Party of Luna County will meet at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 24, at La Fonda Restaurant 601 E. Pine St. in Deming, NM.
While there is currently no scheduled speaker, candidates running for political office use these meetings as a forum to present themselves. All are welcome.
Soil & water meets
The regular monthly board meeting of the Deming Soil and Water Conservation District will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25 at the La Fonda Restaurant, 601 E. Pine St. The meeting will also be available on Zoom at: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5622929930).#success.
Aquatic center opening
The Sam Baca Aquatic Center, located at the corner of Eighth and Buckeye streets, will officially open on May 24, 2022. The center is operated by the City of Deming and features a recreation pool, therapy pool and lap pool with diving board. There is a 150-foot water slide for the recreation pool, cascading water umbrellas and geysers. There is also a snack bar.
Stop by and pick up a brochure for new rules, hours and days of operation and prices.
Come watch 'Encanto'
The City of Deming will provide a free screening of the Disney's motion picture "Encanto" at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at the Trees Lake Amphitheater at 300 North Country Club Road. Seating begins at 7:30 p.m. and popcorn and bottle water will be free to children.
NMSP checkpoints
New Mexico State Police will be conducting sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols; and registration, insurance, and driver's license checkpoints in all New Mexico counties during May 2022.
State police are bringing awareness to the community to reduce the number of impaired driving-related crashes and fatalities through continued media attention and intensive advertising.
State police sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols are helping to change society's attitude about driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor and or drugs.
Hundreds of lives could be saved each year if every driver had the courage to make the right decision to not drive impaired.
DAC call for artists
The Deming Art Council is looking for artists to participate in the June show which features Luna County artists. Each participant must be a Luna County resident and may enter between 1 to 3 items. Intake for the month-long show will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, May 31, 2022.

Children's art class
The Deming Art Council is registering children for free art classes at the Deming Art Center, 100 S. Gold Street. Call the center at 575-546-3663 or stop by and sign up.
The first class will be from 10 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday in May. All ages are welcome.
