DWI Planning Council

The Luna County DWI Planning Council monthly meeting is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 Marie's Italian Grill. This is a hybrid meeting. Agenda, minutes and link to join us will be posted on the county website 72 hours prior to the meeting.

NMDOT I-10 rehab

The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One office in cooperation with Mountain States Construction, Inc. (Contractor) are excited to announce the upcoming roadway rehabilitation project on Interstate 10 from milepost 75 (6 miles west of Deming) to milepost 84 (Deming).

Beginning Monday, July 18, 2022, drivers can expect various daytime lane closures on both the eastbound and westbound lanes as needed. Contractor’s hours of operation will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. This rehabilitation project was awarded in the amount if $14 million and is expected to take 120 working days to complete, weather pending.

Fort Seldon event

Fort Selden Historic Site (FSHS) will host “Summer Nights: A Night of Folklore,” on July 23, 2022. This is a family-friendly evening brimming with food, crafts, live music, and maybe even an appearance from La Llorona herself.

Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for watching the sunset. FSHS has extended its hours to 9 p.m. for this event.

Watch the sun set behind the mountains and enjoy a family-friendly party, including crafts, storytelling, music, dancing, food, and a presented history of urban legends, all culminating in a visit from one of the most famous figures out of New Mexico folklore: La Llorona, the Wailing Woman.

7:30-8:30 p.m.: La Llorona: The Wailing Woman, presented by Rosalia Pacheco and the New Mexico Humanities Council

Luna County notice

The Luna County Road Department has the following restrictions due to overcapacity and issues with maintenance. As of July 8, 2022, all Luna County convenience stations will be closed. The county is working on the problem and hope to fully open all of our locations as soon as possible.

Please direct all questions to the Luna County Road Department at 575-546-2703. In addition, the city's transfer station located at 5470 Hwy. 549 SE remains open and at full capacity, daily until 3 p.m.

Church barbecue

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, at 513 W. First St. in Deming will have a barbecue fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 15, 2022 at the church.

Delivery is available within city limits. Please call 575-936-4279 on Friday after 10 a.m. for orders.

Proceeds benefit our building's revitalization project.

The menu includes barbecue ribs, $10, barbecue brisket, $10, and a combo of ribs and brisket, $12.

Republicans meet

The Republican Party of Luna County will meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, at the Baptist Church located at 206 West Pine St. in Deming. Guest speaker will be Susan Schiffner.

Guest must enter the building at the back door from the rear parking lot.

Meetings are important due to the upcoming election in November. The public is invited, and bring a friend. The Republican Party meets on the second Saturday of each month. The Republican Party Headquarters is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday through Saturday at 112 E. Spruce St. in Deming.

KLCB fundraising

Keep Luna County Beautiful is accepting letters of interest from youth oriented community organizations for Illegal dumping and litter pick-up events around Luna County. Organizations can earn funds for their youth oriented group.

Organizations must commit to participate at one illegal dump site pick up and the Great American Cleanup or Toss No Mas cleanup events in order to earn the $1,000, or participate in the Great American Cleanup or Toss No Mas events, as well as one regular community trash pick-up event to earn the $500.

Letter of interest should include a brief description of your organization, what the funds will be used for and who will benefit from the funds. Letters must be addressed to:

Duck parade sign-up

Applications are now being accepted for the Deming-Luna County Chamber of Commerce Tournament of Ducks Parade. This is the signature event of the 43rd annual Great American Duck Race, Aug. 26-28 in Deming, NM.

Registration forms can be found at www.demingduckrace.com. Deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, 2022.

Museum summer fun

Enjoy a day of family fun at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces.

“Summertime on the Farm” is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, and features yard games, trolley rides, activities, food, and music.

Admission is $10 per carload and includes all of the museum's regular offerings.

The day begins with a bicycle parade for children (12 and under) at 10 a.m. The parade across the bridge and around the South 20 portion of the museum campus includes prizes. Registration for the parade begins at 9:30 a.m.

There will also be wool spinning demonstrations and blacksmithing demonstrations, weather permitting.
