Democrat and Cincinnati City Councilman Greg Landsman is heading to Congress.

U.S. Rep Steve Chabot called Landsman and conceded when Landsman was leading Tuesday night 52% to 49%, Landsman told the crowd at his election night party. The margin was a little over 10,000 votes with almost all the votes in.

Chabot had represented Hamilton County for 26 years in Congress. This was his first defeat since he lost to Democrat Steve Driehaus in 2008. He regained his seat two years later.

It was an expensive and bruising campaign for both sides, with more than $11 million spent on the race between both candidates and outside groups as of mid-October, according to Opensecrets.org.

New district boundaries through the redistricting process gave Democrats a slight edge by 2 percentage points. The 1st Congressional District's new boundaries includes all of the heavily Democratic city of Cincinnati but still retained the Republican stronghold of Warren County, a county Donald Trump won with 65% of the vote in 2020.

With both Republicans and Democrats seeing the district as competitive, Cincinnati-area residents saw Chabot and Landsman often on TV.

In ads, Democrats hammered Chabot on his support for anti-abortion legislation, a strategy seen nationally after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Landsman in interviews also repeatedly reminded voters about Chabot's vote against certifying the Pennsylvania election results in 2020.

Republicans tried to tie Landsman to Nancy Pelosi, whom Landsman worked for briefly in 1999, and tried to convince people he supported defunding police, an accusation Landsman denied.
