Democrat Santarsiero holds off challenge by GOP's McCullough for 10th state Senate seat
Democratic incumbent Steve Santarsiero fought back a challenge by Republican Matthew McCullough for the 10th state Senate seat in Bucks County.
The district covers a large portion of Bucks County, including Bristol Borough, Bristol Township, Buckingham, Chalfont, Doylestown Borough, Doylestown Township, Falls, Lower Makefield, Morrisville, New Britain Borough, New Britain Township, New Hope, Newtown Borough, Newtown Township, Plumstead, Solebury, Tullytown, Upper Makefield, and Yardley.
Santarsiero led with 70,317 votes to McCullough's 52,854, unofficial tallies showed Wednesday morning.
McCullough, a Newtown Township resident and small business owner, is a newcomer to the political field.
Santarsiero, an attorney and teacher from Lower Makefield, was first elected to the state Senate in 2018.
Santarsiero, who also serves as Bucks County Democratic Party chair, co-sponsored a state Senate bill to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2027, and he proposed two current gun control bills — one to establish a system of universal background checks and another banning assault weapons and setting a limit on magazine capacities.
He believes in expanding access to voting by enacting early voting and increasing the number of ballot drop boxes, and supports abortion rights consistent with Pennsylvania’s Abortion Control Act and the Roe v. Wade decision.
“I voted against SB 106, a proposed amendment to our state constitution that would abolish the right to abortion in PA,” Santarsiero said in the Voters Guide responses. “I will continue to oppose attempts to limit or end existing reproductive freedoms in PA.”
He said the Democrats would have a news conference Wednesday to talk about their Election Day wins.
"We expected to lose the ED (Election Day) vote but in many places, we are winning," he said early Tuesday night. He was referring to those voting in person when compared to mail-in ballots.
