Democrat Sherman says Jordan’s Speakership would be ‘good politics for Democrats’

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) said that Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-Ohio) claim of the Speakership gavel would be good politically for Democrats.
During his interview on the “Forbes Newsroom” podcast, the California lawmaker said that Jordan would be “one of the worst Speakers,” but he would be useful for the Democrats due to being a “disaster.”
“If he becomes the face of the Republican House of Representatives, while Donald Trump is the face of the Republican Party, I think that a lot of people will vote for Democrats,” Sherman said.
A lot of GOP members thought during this past weekend that Jordan would have a hard time flipping the votes necessary to secure the gavel.
Currently, the House Judiciary Committee chairman seems to be getting to the finish line with the help of a pressure campaign facilitated by his conference allies.
Just today, Jordan received a much-needed spark by flipping four key lawmakers who signaled opposition just last week. It is a revelation considering that the House has not had a leader for 13 straight days, ever since eight members voted with Democrats to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the Speakership.
Sherman is not a fan of the GOP’s nominee.
“Unfortunately, so many of the Republicans would rather have the worst possible Speaker than to get a good Speaker working along with Democrats,” Sherman said.
During the podcast, Sherman proposed that even former President George W. Bush could become the next Speaker of the House.
“He could come back,” Sherman said. “Obviously, I’m not a real fan of how the Iraq War went, but I would think that any reasonable Republican would be somebody that Democrats could work with.
“If it was part of a system where you didn’t have five of the most extreme Republicans blocking important legislation and saying, ‘If you bring that to the floor for a vote, we’ll knock you out of your Speakership.’”
