County Democratic Central Committee hosts annual dinner

The Washington County Democratic Central Committee held its annual Democratic Dinner last Thursday at The Maryland Theatre, where Senate President and keynote speaker Bill Ferguson, D-Baltimore City, was joined by U.S. Rep. David Trone, D-6th and U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., to speak about the state of the country.

The Maryland lawmakers spoke on topics such as COVID-19, the recently leaked draft Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the American Rescue Plan.

A moment was taken to honor county Treasurer Todd Hershey and Sheriff Doug Mullendore for their years of service in the county. Hershey has been treasurer since 1987 and Mullendore has been sheriff since 2006. Neither is seeking reelection this year.

Former Gov. Martin O'Malley, as well as Democratic candidates running for state and local offices, also were in attendance.

County delegate to host fundraiser

Del. Neil Parrott, R-Washington, said in a news release that he will be hosting a "Take Back the U.S. House" fundraiser.

Parrott, who is running for Maryland's 6th Congressional District, added that the family-friendly event will have zip lining, horse shoes, canoeing, swimming, a dunk tank, rope swings and tug-o-war.

Local political group to host GOP congressional debate

Our Voices for Washington County will be hosting a GOP debate for congressional candidates running for Maryland's 6th Congressional District.

The six Republican candidates will meet 6:30 p.m. May 16 at Hagerstown Community College's Kepler Theater, 11512 Kepler Drive. The event will be free and open to the public.

There will be a GOP reception at 5 p.m. where attendees can meet other Republican candidates in local races. For more information, email v4fmd.washco@gmail.com.
