The startling result of two recent conversations, the subject of which I attempt to avoid broaching with family and friends, was an epiphany, an ah-ha moment or a shot out of the blue; call it what you will.

It suddenly was clear to me that the source of the constant distress with which I had been wrestling the past few months was not the possibility that Donald Trump might lose November’s presidential election, but rather that Joe Biden might win the election.

The two individuals with whom I found myself in discussion were a friend; the kindest most thoughtful, generous individual one could ever meet. The second was my son, a research PhD at Johns Hopkins University.

The catalyst of our conversation was my heartfelt lament, “It tears me apart, like I have never been torn apart before, whenever I am reminded what the left (Biden, Harris, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, etc) has not only said, but promised to do governmentally to this country if they are ever given a chance (pack the Supreme Court of the United States, eliminate the filibuster, neutralize the electoral college).”

My friend gently replied, “they wouldn’t do that”. My son was far more pointed and personal.

Out of curiosity I spent the weekend reading, in their entirety, the 2020 Democratic Party Platform (91 pages) and the Biden-Sanders Unity Report (110 pages).

Virtually every page of the two documents outlined expensive and expansive programs such as retro-fitting 4 million buildings within five years (page 3 Unity Report), extend significant aid to state and local governments to address budget shortfalls (page 13 Unity Report), free college, university, and 2-year community college tuition (page 86 Unity Budget); just to name a few.

However, it was pages 58 and 59 of the Democratic Party Platform that confirmed my gravest and most distressing fears:

“Democratic Party recognizes the need for structural court reforms to increase transparency and accountability.”

“Democrats unequivocally support statehood for Washington, D.C.”

“The people of Puerto Rico deserve self-determination on the issue of status.”

Add to those three statements the fact that Joe Biden and his running mate (the single most liberal voting member of the U.S. Senate) absolutely refused to state their position on court packing and ending the filibuster; while Schumer and Pelosi can’t stop salivating about the possibility.

The facts all but guarantee that should Democrats win this election, America will most certainly become a one-party nation and, for all intents and purposes, people like me (Republicans) will be a non-factor in every national election for at least the remainder of my lifetime; and most likely the lifetime of my grandchildren and beyond.
