V Fixmer-Oraiz and incumbent Jon Green won two seats on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, beating two Republicans and one Independent, maintaining complete control of the five-member board for Democrats.

Democrat Jon Green led the field with 63% of the vote with Fixmer-Oraiz coming in a close second with 57%. Voters, who voted for a maximum of two candidates, put Phil Hemingway in third with 31% of the vote, Jammie Bradshaw in fourth with 25% of the vote, and Eric Heick in last with 3% of the vote.

Election night results are unofficial.

Fixmer-Oraiz, 44, is a first-time candidate from Iowa City and owns Astig Planning, a small business that focuses on climate change impacts and social and racial justice. They made history Tuesday as the first transgender, queer and biracial person elected to the Johnson County government.

Green, 40, was the only incumbent on the ballot and will serve his first full four-year term in office after winning a special election for his seat two years ago. He is a former mayor of Lone Tree and worked in information technology before being elected in 2020.

Hemingway, 62, is a perennial candidate who has run for county office for the last several years on a platform of representing the county's rural voters and advocating against increasing pay rates for Supervisors. He owns Phil's Repair shop and is a former member of the Iowa City school board.

Bradshaw, 36, is a first-time candidate from rural Johnson County working as a certified drone technician and a farmer.

Eric Heick, 23, is an agricultural research associate and farmer and a first-time candidate from West Branch.

A Republican hasn't held elected office in Johnson County government since John Etheredge, who won a 2013 special election, according to the Johnson County Auditor's Office. Oren Alt was the last Republican to win a general election for Supervisor in 1956.

Green and Fixmer-Oriaz will serve for four years on the board alongside Supervisors Rod Sullivan, Royceann Porter and Lisa Green-Douglass, who are all Democrats.
