Democrats name Minyon Moore convention chair

CHICAGO — Minyon Moore, who served as an adviser to President Joe Biden during his nomination of the first Black woman to the Supreme Court, has been named chair of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

The selection of Moore, a Chicago native and confidante of Hillary Clinton, reflects the significance Biden continues to place on Black women voters in the Democratic Party. Moore is credited with playing a role in helping get Vice President Kamala Harris on Biden’s 2020 presidential ticket.

Other members of the convention team are also closely aligned with Biden, the expected Democratic nominee.

Alex Hornbrook, who led the convention selection process, has been named executive director of the convention. Louisa Terrell will serve as a senior adviser to both the convention and the Biden-Harris campaign. Democratic National Committee Deputy Executive Director Roger Lau has been named a senior adviser to the Biden Victory Fund, which is part of an expanded role that includes advising the convention.

In a statement to POLITICO, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison said the convention team brings “unmatched” experience and expertise to the event.

“At the very beginning of the 2024 convention selection process I said that we were looking for a turnkey operation, and I am confident this leadership team will deliver,” Harrison said upon the DNC naming Moore to lead the convention.

In a separate statement, Moore said she is “thrilled” to serve as convention chair “in my hometown of Chicago, Ill. I am grateful to the team members who have already been working hard, and know that through their work, and the strong team we continue to build, that this convention will be a success. I can’t wait to showcase all that Chicago and the Democratic Party have to offer as we celebrate the renomination of President Biden and Vice President Harris next year.”

Chicago beat out Atlanta and New York to host next year’s Democratic convention Aug. 19-22, 2024.

Moore grew up in Chicago, went to public schools, graduated from University of Illinois at Chicago and went on to work for the National Rainbow Push Coalition, which is based in the city. She got her start in politics working on Rev. Jesse Jackson’s presidential campaign before becoming a Democratic power player in Washington, D.C.

Moore would go on to work in former President Bill Clinton’s White House and on Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. She counts former President Barack Obama as a friend, and she is a former CEO of the Democratic National Committee.

Hornbrook currently serves as the DNC’s director of convention planning and before that led the DNC’s debate planning. Terrell most recently served as Biden’s director of the White House Office of Legislative Affairs. And Lau came to the DNC after working for Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s office.
