Democrats sweep all 9th District judgeships for 10th straight year

Two incumbents and two Rockland County judges, all Democrats, swept four state Supreme Court judgeships in the 9th Judicial District Tuesday, making it 10 straight years Republicans have not won a judicial race in the district.

Justices Francesca Connolly and Charles Wood won second 14-year terms as the top vote getters among the eight candidates and the Rockland judges Larry Schwartz and Rolf Thorsen came in third and fourth, respectively, according to unofficial results posted by the state Board of Elections.

They easily beat John Sarcone III of Croton-on-Hudson in Westchester, LaGrange Town Judge Susan Sullivan-Bisceglia from Dutchess County, Minisink Town Judge Karen Ostberg from Orange County and John Ciampoli of Long Island.

The district covers the five counties north of New York City, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange and Dutchess. The Democrats also had the Conservative line on the ballot.

The results were close in Orange and Putnam counties but the Democrats doubled up the Republicans in Westchester, the most populous county.

The top GOP candidate, Sarcone, finished about 40,000 votes behind Thorsen.
