After standing for more than half a century, a fixture on the University of Detroit Mercy's campus has started to come down this week in Detroit.

Pieces of the Fisher Administration Center were falling to the ground Friday morning as demolition continued at the university's McNichols Campus, casting dust and debris into an already foggy gray sky. Designed by the firm of Gunnar Birkets and Co., the Fisher building had become close to obsolete in recent years, serving as a training space for law enforcement, and had become too costly to maintain, according to the university.

Demolition was the most cost-effective move, and so it was decided the building would be leveled.

The building originally was crafted in the mid-1960s to house the university's administrative offices but in recent years had been deteriorating. including heating and cooling issues, flooding in the lower level, and janky elevators that occasionally trapped students and staff between floors. Expensive renovations prompted university leaders to instead pursue an expansion to the McNichols Campus Student Union and move the majority of administrative offices to the student union building last summer.
