Demolition of Edgewater Manor in Stevens Point expected to begin Monday

STEVENS POINT − Demolition of Edgewater Manor is set to begin as early as Monday morning, Mayor Mike Wiza announced Friday.

The city voted to close the senior-living apartment complex on Water Street in December 2020 after bids to repair longstanding issues came in over budget. The building has been vacant since late May 2021.

After the building was empty, it was used for training by local firefighters, paramedics and law enforcement teams, Wiza said in a news release. When that training was completed, any reusable material was salvaged or repurposed including appliances, electric wiring and other items.

Asbestos removal has been happening over the last several weeks, he said.

In August, the City Council approved a contract with Robinson Brother Environmental for about $427,000 to remove the asbestos and demolish Edgewater, south of downtown Stevens Point along the Wisconsin River.

Money to pay for the demolition will come out of the city's Edgewater fund that the city maintained over the years from excess rent revenues collected from residents of the complex, which was built in 1978.

The city has set up a livestream camera and people can view the progress at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlrVTXPZihg. The city has also set up a time-lapse camera and that recording will be made available when demolition is complete.

Once demolition is complete the city will likely take proposals for redevelopment, but there are currently no plans for the site, Wiza said.
