Regal River City Marketplace may have shown its last movie.

The North Jacksonville multiplex lists no future screenings on the company’s website or ticketing platforms Fandango, Showtimes and others.

Regal, via a social media message on Friday afternoon, confirmed that the theater was currently closed.

A request for comment from a Regal spokesperson was not immediately returned.

The multiplex that opened some 16 years ago has been identified as the future home of a BJ’s Wholesale Club, according to plans submitted to the St. Johns Water Management District earlier this summer. River City Marketplace owner RPT Realty wants to raze the 60,000-square-foot building and build the 103,000-square-foot store and gas station.

A permit for the demolition of the building at 12884 City Center Blvd. filed by the property’s owner is currently in review by the city. The Jacksonville Daily Record first reported the demolition permit.

The Regal River City Marketplace movie theater first opened in 2006

Regal River City Marketplace opened as Hollywood Theaters in November 2006 in the first wave of openings at the sprawling, open-air marketplace near Jacksonville International Airport, bringing major retailers and restaurants to the growing area. (The Hollywood Theaters name remains atop the building.)

It was the first (and only) multiplex in Northside, which has a population of more than 115,000 people within seven miles of River City Marketplace, according to RPT Realty marketing materials.

With the closing, the closest theaters for moviegoers include AMC Regency 24 (15 miles away) and AMC Classic Yulee 10 (17 miles away).

The closing and demolition of the theater would be the second this year for Regal in the Jacksonville market.

In February, a permit was issued for the demolition of Regal Beach Boulevard 18 to make way for the construction of 334 apartments by Texas-based real estate developer Presidium.

Regal Avenues, located at 9525 Philips Highway, remains open.
