Demonstrators Clash with Caracas Police as Guaido Declares Himself Interim President

Protesters clashed with police in the Venezuelan capital Caracas on January 23 as opposition leader Juan Guaidó declared himself interim president.

These videos show protesters using gas masks and other gear during the protests against incumbent president Nicolas Maduro in the city’s Chacaíto neighborhood.

Demonstrators can be seen hiding behind boards and makeshift shields as rocks and other objects are thrown back and forth.

Venezuela’s opposition-held National Assembly decried the 2018 presidential elections as a fraud. Maduro was accused by the opposition, analysts, and the United States government of manipulating the election results.

The assembly invoked a constitutional amendment that allows the leader of the legislature, in this case Juan Guaidó, to take control of the federal government as interim president until new elections can be held. Credit: Andres Gerlotti via Storyful
