Demonstrators Gather in Montreal After Death of Woman in Police Custody in Tehran
Demonstrators gathered in Montreal, Canada, on Wednesday, September 21, in support of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died in hospital days after she was taken into custody by Iran’s morality police.
Video by Gity Pour shows the crowd, whom he described as Iranian Canadians. The demonstration was held amid a wave of protests in Iran over the death of Amini, who was taken into custody for allegedly breaking the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code.
According to the Iran Human Rights organisation, at least 31 people have been killed, “with reports of widespread arrests of protesters and civil rights activists”.
According to internet watchdog NetBlocks, internet access has been disrupted in several parts of the country since the protests began. There have been restrictions on Instagram and WhatsApp and a “nation-scale shutdown of mobile networks," the watchdog said.
