Demonstrators Gather in Nice, France, to Protest Proposed Law Banning Spread of Police Images

About 200 demonstrators gathered in front of the Palais de Justice in Nice, France, on Tuesday, November 17, to protest a global security bill that would make it illegal to publish photos of the police with an intent to harm, local media reported.

The demonstrations took place throughout France with crowds forming in Rennes, Lyon, Toulouse, Bordeaux, and other cities, local media reported.

A rally in Paris ended in violence, according to reports, as police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds.

The demonstration was organized by journalists’ unions and human rights organizations to protest the proposed bill, which they believe would prohibit filming of the police during demonstrations.

Civilians and journalists who disseminate “the image of the face or any other element of identification” of an officer with the intent to "undermine his physical or mental integrity” would be charged with one year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros, according to local news reports.
