Denim for a Donation: TLC Community Credit Union employees raise funds for Associated Charities

ADRIAN — A significant contribution made by the employees of TLC Community Credit Union has recently been donated to the Associated Charities of Lenawee County.

TLC Community Credit Union said its employees raised and donated $6,500 for the benefit of the Associated Charities of Lenawee County, located in Adrian, through the credit union’s “Denim for a Donation” program, where employees have the option to contribute via payroll deductions to dress down and wear denim on Fridays and Saturdays of the work week.

Each year, TLC employees select a local organization to support through the denim program, a news release said. This year, Associated Charities “rose to the top” due to the nonprofit organization’s “vital role in meeting the basic needs of the community,” TLC said.

Associated Charities of Lenawee provides assistance through various programs throughout Lenawee County. It has been around since 1912 and has been dedicated to meeting the basic needs of individuals and families in the county through programming, clothing distributions, food assistance, a holiday gift program and more.

Last year, the 110-year-old building on South Tecumseh Street in Adrian that the Associated Charities of Lenawee County calls home, was set ablaze by an arsonist right before the charity’s annual back-to-school shopping event. Over three days, about 350 kids come in and collect clothing, backpacks and school supplies to start the school year at no cost to them. Everything is donated by the community and passed out free-of-charge. Most of the items were destroyed or damaged by fire and smoke from a burning can of gasoline that was thrown into the building through the window of the front door.

Bush Lee Paulding, 54, was arrested in June of this year after Adrian police announced in May he was the suspect in the August 2022 arson of the Associated Charities building at the corner of South Tecumseh and Frank streets. Paulding is charged with manufacture or possession of a Molotov cocktail and third-degree arson.

"We are incredibly proud of our employees and their commitment to giving back to our community," Jeff Brehmer, President/CEO of TLC Community Credit Union, said in the release. "Their generous donation will have a real impact on the lives of those who need it most. Associated Charities provides vital services to our community, and we are honored to support their mission."
