Denison University welcomes Dartmouth professor for lecture
Denison University and the Gordon Lecture Series welcomes Professor of Mathematics at Dartmouth College and one of the North American co-directors for the Aquincum Institute of Technology (AIT) study abroad program in Budapest, Hungary Michael Orrison Jr., presenting "Change of Perspective in Mathematics" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, in Room 115 of the Burton D. "Change of Perspective in Mathematics," promises to be an enlightening exploration of the central role that changes in perspective play within the world of mathematics. Orrison will delve into the fascinating connections between various mathematical concepts and the profound impact of shifting our viewpoint.
Change of perspective is ubiquitous in mathematics. Consider, for example, equivalent fractions, change of coordinates, u-substitution, Bayes’ Theorem, or even the simple fact that 2 + 3 = 3 + 2. In this talk, he’ll offer some reflections on the unifying role that change of perspective plays when we learn, share, create, and discover mathematics. Orrison will also share how conversations over the years with teachers, students, and his own children have shaped his understanding of the power of change of perspective.
