Denmark's star soccer player 'stabilized' after collapsing midgame, CPR administered

Denmark’s star soccer player was hospitalized after collapsing during the team’s game against Finland on Saturday.

Christian Eriksen, 29, collapsed on the field during the 43rd minute. Seconds before, he could be seen stumbling toward the sideline. A teammate’s inbounds pass hit him, and he fell to the ground.

His teammates tried to signal for medical attention. Medics administered CPR as players from both teams looked on with concern.

Eriksen appeared to be awake as he was carried off the field on a stretcher after being on the field for nearly 20 minutes.

"Following the medical emergency involving Denmark's player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 7:45 p.m. CET (1.45 p.m. ET)," a UEFA statement read. "The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised."

The game was suspended with the score 0-0 once Eriksen collapsed. It is unclear when it will resume.

Eriksen plays for Italian champion Inter Milan and has played for Denmark for over a decade.

The 2020 UEFA European Championship tournament, which was delayed a year because of the coronavirus pandemic, started on Friday.
