INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (WJW) – Former Cleveland mayor and Democratic U.S. representative Dennis Kucinich is running for Congress again.

Kucinich held a press conference Wednesday in Independence to formally announce his candidacy for Ohio’s 7th Congressional District.

Kucinich will run as an independent. He filed last week.

He’ll challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Max Miller of Rocky River for the seat.

In Wednesday’s press conference, he said the American people are losing faith in a divided Congress.

“I’m uniquely able to reach in and heal the partisan divide,” Kucinich said at the press conference.

“I have a bond of trust with voters, which goes beyond party labels,” Kucinich said.

The 7th Congressional District includes a portion of Cleveland, Westlake down through Strongsville, Medina and Wooster.

“Now more than ever, America needs persons with experience in Congress…to guide our nation through this difficult time,” Kucinich said Wednesday.

Kucinich, 77, served in the U.S. House from 1997 to 2012, until he was defeated in a primary challenge from sitting Ninth Congressional District U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur.

The former Cleveland mayor also ran for president in 2004 and 2008. He also had failed bids for Ohio governor in 2018 and, most recently, for Cleveland mayor in 2021.
