Dennis Quaid is adding a furry friend to his family with a familiar name – a cat named Dennis Quaid!
In an interview with Roanoke-based, NBC-affiliated television station WSLS, the actor, 66, confirmed that he would be giving the kitty Quaid a forever home after NBC stations across the country promoted a "Clear the Shelters" initiative.
“It was really off the wall, but I just couldn’t resist. I had to,” the actor said.
He continued, smiling, "I’m out to save all the Dennis Quaids of the world."
The cat was being cared for at the Lynchburg Humane Society in Virginia when Quaid found out about him.
The local station previously featured the six-year-old cat on air during its "Clear the Shelters" segment, saying he has been waiting for a family for over a year, has a big heart and likes to curl up on the couch.
The actor added that he talks about animals and pet culture on a podcast he co-hosts with Jimmy Jellinek.
Jellinek, who was also featured in the video interview, said that it took a while for the shelter to actually believe it was the real Dennis Quaid who was inquiring about adopting the feline.
After meeting the cat via Zoom, Quaid is set to fly from Los Angeles to Lynchburg this week to pick up his new pet, the station reports.
"Maybe they should start naming animals in shelters after different celebrities and see who bites," Quaid added.
A cat isn't the only new love in the actor's life.
"It was beautiful," he told the magazine. "Just looking into her eyes, she was the most stunning bride"
