Denver could see biggest snowstorm in 3 years: Forecast

DENVER (KDVR) — The snowstorm the Pinpoint Weather team has been tracking for days got underway Wednesday across Colorado and in Denver weather with rain and snow showers and even some thunder.

This storm will draw a lot of moisture into the state in the next 24-36 hours to create impressive snow totals. According to Pinpoint Weather, Colorado’s Most Accurate Forecast, confidence is high that travel will be challenging on Thursday.

Weather tonight: Rain changes to snow

Snow will continue in the Colorado mountains and the foothills west of Denver all night. The rain will change to snow at lower elevations across the Denver area later in the evening.

The snow will continue until late Thursday night before slowly ending as a few flurries early on Friday. The snow will be heavy at times and, combined with some gusty wind, can create poor visibility.

A winter storm warning will be in effect across the Denver area starting at 9 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Friday.

Weather tomorrow: Deep snow totals with travel impacts

The snow totals from this storm will measure in feet in some places.

The deepest snow totals will be in the foothills west of the Front Range with up to 3 feet possible. There could even be a few spots that approaching 40-plus inches.

The other area with high totals is south of Denver across the Palmer Divide with up to 2 feet of heavy wet snow possible.

Denver will have snow totals ranging from:

  • 6-8 inches on the east side,

  • 12 inches possible downtown, and

  • up to 16 inches possible on the west side.

Looking ahead: Friday flurries then sunny with melting

There will be a few leftover flurries early on Friday especially south of Denver. The impact to travel looks low. The sunshine will return during the afternoon and melting will get underway.

It’ll be a sunny weekend with more melting each day. Temperatures will stay in the cool 40s due to the snow on the ground.

As the snow melts away, the sunshine will warm temperatures back into the seasonal 50s and even back into the warm 60s by the middle of next week.
