Denver councilwoman’s tweet calls for people with coronavirus to go to Trump rallies

The Colorado Republican Party is calling for the resignation of a Denver city councilwoman after she joked about going to a Make America Great Again rally if she caught the coronavirus, multiple outlets report.

Democratic Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca responded “#solidarity Yaaaas!!” with laughing emojis to a tweet from a woman last week that read, “For the record, if I do get the coronavirus I’m attending every MAGA rally I can.”

The original tweet has been deleted, but multiple media outlets, Denver Republicans, the Colorado GOP and several others have shown screengrabs of the tweet.

CdeBaca said her tweet was meant to call attention to Trump’s response to coronavirus, she said. It was not meant to be taken seriously, CdeBaca’s spokesperson Lisa Calderón told The Denver Post.

“1. Are you listening to ANYTHING Trump has said about the virus?” CdeBaca tweeted Tuesday. “2. Do you realize Trump reduced the virus to a common flu? 3. I know sarcasm is hard to read in a tweet, but you are usually a bit quicker than this. Next time I will use more emoji’s just 4 you.”

Many people, however, didn’t find CdeBaca’s tweet to be a joking matter. The Colorado GOP called for her to resign immediately in a Tuesday news release.

“Councilwoman CdeBaca praising a social media post calling for Trump supporters to be infected with the coronavirus is simply disgusting,” Colorado GOP Executive Director LX Fangonilo said in the news release. “There can be no room in our politics for wishing harm on Americans who have different political beliefs.”

The Denver Republican Party said in a statement that CdeBaca’s actions were “unacceptable” and don’t “represent the values that made Denver what it is today.”

“In Denver, we choose to come together to support one another, regardless of circumstances -- including political affiliation,” Denver Republican Party said in a statement. “Instead of unity, however, Councilwoman CdeBaca stands in solidarity with those supporting harm against members of the community who think differently than she does.”
