Depth powers Frenship to sweep of District 2-6A track titles

WOLFFORTH — Devin Moore needed a few minutes for the blood to start flowing back to her legs.

The Frenship junior had just completed a title win in the 400-meter dash during the District 2-6A track and field meet Thursday. Moore sat on the turf of Peoples Bank Stadium collecting herself. Her legs were "completely dead."

But when the time came to receive her gold medal, she was back to her old self.

That wouldn't have been the case a year ago. Moore adjusted her training regimen during the summer to incorporate weight lifting. It started with squats and deadlifts before those exercises hurt her back. She's focused those efforts in other areas of her body, which have improved her times on the track.

"I feel more confident," Moore said. "My head doesn't come up. I feel stronger on that end. I feel like I recover faster."

The second day of the district meet led to the dead legs, though Moore would've been down much longer back in her sophomore year.

Instead, she got back up and anchored the winning 1,600 relay to finish the meet, marking Moore's third gold of the day and ensuring the Tigers a third straight district title.

Frenship wound up sweeping the team titles with the boys securing a crown of their own. Moore was just one of the Frenship athletes to find success in multiple events.

Amaya Mendoza won the 3,200 and 1,600 runs for the girls. Aden Soto captured gold in the 400, took third in the 200 and was part of a Tiger sweep of the triple jump — which was won by Ose Olumese with a leap of 45 feet, 5 inches.

Olumese said he felt good throughout the day but, for a reason he couldn't put his finger on, was unable to get to the 47-foot mark in the event. Still, he was rather excited to see Soto and Bryce Garza — who took second — hit PRs to ensure an all-Frenship finish.

"It's great to have your teammates here because they're right by your side," Olumese said. "These are the guys I practice with every single day. ... We're all brothers. We're all family and we all support each other. That's how it is."

Lillian Guzman, who was part of the winning 1,600 relay team, started Thursday with a comeback win in the long jump. On her final attempt, Guzman overtook Midland Legacy's Aaralyn Strambler for the title with a leap of 17-8¾.

"Honestly, I (felt) like I could do another jump," Guzman said, "but I'm just happy to advance to area now."

Both Frenship head coaches attributed the team success to their deep roster of athletes. Stefanie Shortes' girls team totaled 211 points — Midland Legacy was a distant second at 127 points — while Chris Fanelli's boys unit topped the field at 168 points.

It was quite the turnaround for the boys after a fifth-place finish in last year's district meet.

"Freshmen, sophomores, everybody contributed today," Fanelli said. "... We knew (San Angelo Central) would be strong in their relays and we could match them in two of the three, but I think just the consistency and scoring, scoring in the field events. ... I think our depth in our numbers gives us a huge advantage in meets like this."

The Frenship girls continued their impressive season, having yet to lose a meet as a team. That mentality has extended into the postseason.

"It's just all their work ethic, their mindset," Shortes said. "We say mindset all the time, but they have the right mindset that they just want to win. They expect to win.
