‘It’s insane’: 1 shot in road rage incident in Alexander County, deputies say

Sheriff’s deputies in Alexander County said they tracked down a man who shot another driver Thursday morning during a road rage incident.

It happened sometime after 10 a.m. near the Stony Point area of Alexander County.

From Chopper 9 Skyzoom, we could see investigators searching a pickup truck after a man was able to drive to a convenience store after being hit by gunfire.

Deputies said it all started at the intersection of Cheatham Ford Road and Highway 90, possibly over someone tailgating. They said two men got out of their trucks and one shot the other.

“The guy brake checked me and I went around him, and then he caught up with my boyfriend and shot him,” Danielle Hackworth told Channel 9′s Dave Faherty.

Hackworth said she was having engine trouble and was behind another driver who suddenly hit his brakes. Her boyfriend was following in his pickup truck. Deputies said both men got out of their vehicles and got into a confrontation.

“He got out to tell him that my truck was overheating and the old man went to hit him,” Hackworth said. “And my boyfriend knocked his arm out of the way and then he took a step back and shot him.”

Deputies showed Faherty where the bullets hit the truck’s windshield after first hitting Hackworth’s boyfriend. The bullet traveled through his shoulder before striking his truck.

Investigators said the boyfriend managed to drive to a nearby convenience store. His mother rushed to the store. She told Faherty she’s in disbelief this could happen in Stony Point.

“We moved here to get out of Cincinnati, the big town, and it happens in a small little populated town. It’s insane,” Mary Anne Mattingley said. “People are crazy everywhere.”

Hackworth’s boyfriend is still in the hospital.

Deputies said they have charged the driver, David Bryant Marlowe, with assault with a deadly weapon. They say they identified him after a witness got a partial tag number and a description of his pickup truck.
