A man who was shot by deputies after alleged reckless and violent actions with a knife at a WinCo Foods in Victorville is being held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer.

Todderick Randall, a 39-year-old Victorville resident, is considered in custody and stable condition after he was airlifted to a hospital with gunshot wounds on Friday. Deputies say he tried to seriously injure them with a knife, according to a Saturday night release by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

The WinCo Foods at the corner of Roy Rogers Drive and Amargosa Road in Victorville closed Friday afternoon after a disturbance in the supermarket that prompted someone to call police.

Randall was being held on a $50,000 bail at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga as of Sunday afternoon, according to sheriff's booking records. He's set to appear in Victorville Superior Court at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23.

The records show Randall was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm against a peace officer. If charged with this crime, he could face a multi-year prison sentence under California law, which says this offense "shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for three, four, or five years."

Deputies from the Victorville Sheriff’s Station dispatched to the WinCo at about 12:05 p.m. Friday in response to a caller reporting an "unwanted subject" armed with a knife, now identified as Randall, according to the Sheriff's release Saturday evening.

"Randall obtained a large bottle of alcohol from a shelf and began drinking it," the release says of the disturbance prior to deputies arriving.

After deputies arrived and in spite of "multiple commands to drop the knife," Randall refused to disarm and "resisted and fled on foot" when the officers tried to detain him, according to the release.

He "eventually stopped and confronted deputies with the knife," to which the deputies responded by shooting him.

"Deputies rendered medical aid and Randall was airlifted to a hospital where he is in stable condition," the release states.

No deputies, WinCo staff members or civilian bystanders were injured in the incident, according to Sheriff’s spokeswoman Gloria Huerta.

Huerta told the Daily Press two deputies were involved in the response. The department hasn't identified either of them, and Huerta said on Sunday that she was unsure when their information would be available. Sheriff’s officials on Friday had declined to reveal the identity of the person shot or if they were armed in the encounter with deputies.

One witness told the Daily Press on Friday that they saw a man causing a disturbance in the WinCo before deputies arrived, and reported hearing “five to six shots” as they left the store.
