Deputies say a Southern Indiana woman was killed in a head-on collision

A Troy, Indiana, woman died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision in Spencer County on Tuesday evening, according to sheriff's deputies.

Debra Scherer, 68, died at Owensboro Regional Hospital, where she'd been taken following the 5:17 p.m. incident.

According to a news release from the Spencer County Sheriff's Office, Scherer's Toyota RAV4 was struck head-on by a Chevrolet van that crossed the center line on Indiana 66 just east of Old Lamar Highway. Deputies say they still don't know why the van, driven by 22-year-old Ezekiel Wannemuhler of Mount Vernon, Indiana, crossed the center line.

Deputies reported that both drivers were injured and trapped in their vehicles when emergency crews arrived.

Indiana State Police reconstructionists are investigating the wreck. Alcohol is believed to not have been a factor, and blood test results are pending, according to the sheriff's office.
