Deputy, bystander shot Friday before standoff in Grady County

Law enforcement officials were involved in a standoff Friday after a sheriff’s deputy and a resident were shot near Blanchard.

Around 11:45 a.m., Grady County deputies were checking on the welfare of a female resident near County Road 2960 and Quail Haven Road. Deputies concluded she was “acting very strangely” and handcuffed her “for her own safety,” according to Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Foster.

“At some point, the woman was able to slip out of the handcuffs, get to a firearm and began to fire rounds at everybody in the area,” Foster said.

One deputy was shot and taken to OU Health – University of Oklahoma Medical Center to get treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, according to Sabra Martin, executive assistant to the Grady County Sheriff’s Office.

“The deputy is OK, and that’s the main thing,” Martin said.

A bystander also was injured during the shooting and was taken to a hospital. Foster said he was not certain of that person's condition, but Martin believed the person was "walking and talking.”

The woman barricaded herself inside a patrol officer’s vehicle but was unable to drive off. A tactical team cordoned off the area and attempted to persuade the woman to exit the vehicle throughout the afternoon. Shortly after 5 p.m., the woman surrendered.

“She gave up of her own volition and was taken into custody with no use of force,” Foster said. “The situation is secure and everyone is safe.”
