Deputy is the third from Florida department to be shot in recent days

PENSACOLA, Fla. – An Escambia County sheriff's deputy was shot four times Wednesday afternoon while responding to a call for medical assistance, the third deputy from the department to be shot in the last five days.

The deputy is expected to make a full recovery, Sheriff David Morgan said.

According to Morgan, emergency dispatchers received a call for assistance at 1:37 p.m. Wednesday. The caller told dispatchers he was experiencing domestic problems and requested that an ambulance be sent to his home.

EMS responders requested that deputies accompany them to the home, which is not unusual, Morgan said. The deputies arrived before the ambulance.

According to Morgan, Daniel Hux, 41, drew his gun on deputies as soon as they arrived at his home. He was also shot “upwards of four times" in the exchange and was undergoing surgery late Wednesday afternoon.

“As I understand it, the exchange of gunfire was almost immediate.”

This is the third deputy, and fourth law enforcement officer, shot in Pensacola the last week.

Two deputies were shot Friday while responding to the deadly shooting at NAS Pensacola. One deputy was shot in the arm, while the other deputy was shot in the knee, requiring surgery. Both deputies have since been released from the hospital.

An NAS Pensacola officer was also shot in the attack and is expected to make a full recovery.
