Derby wins highlight Kansas high school regional results for baseball, softball and soccer
Senior Trinity Kuntz delivered a key hit to finish off a come-from-behind 8-6 victory over Topeka on Tuesday to send the Derby softball team back to the Class 6A state tournament.
In a regional championship game on its home field, Derby trailed 6-4 entering the sixth inning. A sacrifice fly by Karlie Demel clawed back a run, then Addy Canfield drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game.
With the bases loaded, Kuntz showed bunt and then pulled back to crack a ball into the outfield gap to plate the go-ahead runs. Kyler Demel slid around the tag at home plate to score from second base and give Derby the cushion it needed.
Canfield, Derby’s star pitcher, shut the door on Topeka in the final inning, as the Panthers will head to Lawrence with a 21-1 record for next week’s 6A state tournament.
In Class 5A, defending state champion Valley Center had no problems punching its ticket back to the state tournament. The Hornets easily dispatched Hutchinson 11-0, then Maize South 9-1 in the championship game on Tuesday to advance back to the state tournament in Wichita with a 20-2 record.
In Class 4A, a trio of AV-CTL teams are headed back to the state tournament in McPherson, Clearwater and Mulvane. The Bullpups (19-3) were the top seed in the 4A West region and earned two shutout wins in their regional, while Mulvane (17-5) did the same in its own regional as host.
The lone upset came from Clearwater, which had to survive a 9-8 victory in nine innings over Wellington to start the day before routing Pratt, the regional host, in a 14-3 victory in the regional championship game. Clearwater advanced to the state tournament with a 14-8 record.
In a loaded 3A regional hosted at Cheney, four of the top teams in the classification battled in a pair of one-run Tuesday’s semifinals that saw Haven prevail over Kingman, 6-5, then Trinity Academy top Cheney, 5-4. Haven (21-1) will play Trinity (20-2) with a spot at state on the line in Wednesday’s 4 p.m. championship game in Cheney.
Derby baseball among local teams advancing to state
The Derby baseball team didn’t allow a single run hosting its regional tournament to secure its place in next week’s Class 6A state tournament.
After the Panthers survived a pitcher’s duel in the opening-round game with Washburn Rural, a 1-0 victory, Derby easily took care of Dodge City in a 10-0, run-rule victory in the championship game. Derby advanced to the state tournament with a 14-8 record.
The upset of the night was a 15-over-2 upset on the seed line with Andover taking down host Kapaun Mt. Carmel in an opening-round 4-3 victory in eight innings at Westurban. The Trojans rallied to score two runs late to force extra innings, then Peyton White and Brenden Buseman delivered back-to-back RBI singles in the top of the eighth. Kapaun rallied in the bottom-half of the inning, clawing back a run and loading the bases with two outs, but Andover held on to secure the win and stun Kapaun, which finished with a 17-4 record.
But the Cinderella run would not end in a state berth, as Andover lost 4-3 in the championship game to Great Bend. The Trojans took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Great Bend rallied for the game-tying run and then walked it off on an Andover error.
In the other 6A regional involving local teams played on Tuesday, Wichita Heights advanced to the championship game but lost 10-0 to host Manhattan. The Falcons concluded a 12-10 season after defeating Liberal 7-4 in the opening game.
McPherson (18-4) and Larned (14-7) both punched their tickets to the 4A state tournament with victories on Tuesday. McPherson run-ruled El Dorado, 14-0, then defeated Buhler, 6-2, in the finals, while Larned won 2-0 over Chapman and then knocked off regional host Pratt in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel in the finals.
Local girls soccer regional championship games set in stone
The Class 5A West regional finals are once again littered with the Wichita area’s top teams.
City League rivals Bishop Carroll and Kapaun Mt. Carmel, which upset Valley Center 2-1 on Tuesday, are set to face off in a Thursday championship game, while Eisenhower knocked off Newton 3-1 to set up a showdown against undefeated No. 1 seed Maize South in a Friday night title game.
Andover (15-2) and Maize (13-4) figures to be an entertaining affair after the two clubs easily advanced on Tuesday to set up a Friday final, while Andover Central (14-3) will host Hays (13-4) in the other local final on Friday.
A City League showdown will determine a quarterfinalist in the 6A West bracket, as Northwest and East both easily advanced on Tuesday to set up a Friday clash between the pair of 11-win teams.
Fellow league member North, a 2-1 winner over Southeast, also advanced and will play at No. 1 seed Garden City (12-2-1) on Thursday. The other area team to advance was Derby, a 4-1 winner over Topeka to advance to Thursday’s final at No. 2 seed Washburn Rural (12-4-1).
A handful of seed upsets highlighted the opening round of play in the 4-1A West region, as Trinity Academy edged Buhler 2-0, Mulvane took down Classical 1-0 and Collegiate raced past Nickerson 8-0.
Trinity (8-8) will face No. 1 seed Independent (13-3) on Thursday, while Mulvane (8-9) will renew its AV-CTL rivalry with No. 2 seed Circle (13-4) on Friday and No. 3 seed McPherson (13-4) will host Collegiate (5-9) on Thursday. The other regional final will feature Rose Hill (11-6) hosting Topeka Hayden (9-5-2) on Thursday.
