Derek Jeter's first Yankees jersey sells for record amount at auction

Derek Jeter has a new accomplishment to add to his trophy case.
The New York Yankees great’s first jersey with the team — worn in 1995 — sold for $369,000 at auction earlier this month, the highest a modern-era jersey has ever sold for, according to its seller, Goldin Auctions.
The sum breaks the previous record held by Mike Piazza’s jersey from his famous post-9/11 home run, which was sold for $365,000, much to the player’s chagrin.
Jeter wore the record jersey during a 15-game call-up to the majors that preceded his Rookie of the Year campaign in 1996. He donned the jersey for his MLB debut on May 29, 1995, in a road game against the Seattle Mariners, then went on to hit 250/.294/.375 in 51 plate appearances.
Bidding for the jersey started at $50,000. The jersey was part of a winter auction that brought in more than $5 million, according to Goldin, and included other memorabilia such as a gold medal from the Miracle on Ice, a Mickey Mantle game-used jersey and a Kobe Bryant-signed scorer’s report from his 81-point game.
“The selection of historic jerseys, trading cards, bats and more that we assembled was truly remarkable, so it’s not surprising that so many new record prices were established,” Goldin Auctions founder Ken Goldin said. “We want to thank our consignors for allowing us to sell these remarkable collectibles and congratulate our bidders for adding these rare items to their collections.”
