Viera High joined MCC this week in the search for a new head football coach, in this case to replace departing Hawks coach Derek Smith.
Smith's Hawks teams went 25-17 in four seasons with three district titles and three wins in the regional playoffs. The team produced a 5-5 record this season, losing in the first round of the playoffs following a district runner-up finish to rival Melbourne.
Smith was the head coach for the Hawks since the departure of Kevin Mays in November of 2017. The opening is the second in Brevard high school football this month. MCC head coach Walt Ramsay stepped down last week.

Previously, Smith had been the head coach at Bayside (2009-12), where his teams were 25-21 in four seasons and reached the regional finals twice. At Viera, Smith served as Mays' defensive coordinator before becoming head coach.
