Des Moines Biergarten returns to Water Works Park with German beers, brats and currywurst
"Roll out the barrel, we'll have a barrel of fun." What started last September returns when Des Moines Biergarten — a pop-up German-themed beer garden that the whole family can visit — reopens at Water Works Park on Wednesday.
That means steins of German and local craft beers and German-inspired food in an outdoor setting. Only this year, the beer garden features a bigger footprint and longer schedule. Last season, the pop-up remained open in September and October.
The Biergarten sits east of the Lauridsen Amphitheater in Water Works Park under a tree canopy.
The owners of Dough Co. Pizza teamed up with Water Works Park Foundation on the project, and this season, plan to bring a bigger footprint and longer schedule. A portion of the revenue generated from the Biergarten will be donated to the Water Works Park Foundation.

What to expect at Des Moines Biergarten in 2023
This pop-up beer garden plans to serve a German-inspired menu that includes favorites such as bratwursts, hot dogs and pretzels, as well as German potato salads, currywurst rolls and more.
The space includes live music, yard games, large picnic tables and hammocks.
“After a hugely successful first season of the Des Moines Biergarten, we’re excited to bring an improved experience this year,” Alec Davis with Orvis Horatio Group said in a new release. “Along with steins of German and local beer on tap, we can’t wait to offer a new and improved menu all season long.”

When is the Des Moines Biergarten open?
This season, the Des Moines Biergarten opens at noon every Wednesday through Sunday through the end of October. It will close during inclement weather, and the owners suggest following the Biergarten on social media for updates.
What can beer fans bring?
Customers can bring lawn chairs, blankets, hammocks, yard games, and refillable water bottles. The Biergarten has picnic tables and hammocks for seating.
