Des Moines man dies on delivery route in single-vehicle accident in Story County

A Des Moines man died in a single-vehicle accident in Story County Tuesday evening during his delivery route.

The Story County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of an unconscious man near Boone and North streets in Sheldahl, according to a news release.

43-year-old Joel Potter of Des Moines was driving a box truck registered to Starco Inc. that entered a ditch. According to the release, witnesses saw him leave the Shedahl Post Office and nearly come to a stop in the middle of the road before accelerating off.

He then drove in a ditch, through the corner of a garage, hit a tree, storage shed and stopped in another ditch, according to witnesses.

Potter was the only person in the vehicle.

Officials say the investigation indicates a medical issue likely contributed to the crash and Potter's death. According to the news release, Potter had trouble breathing before leaving the most recent stop on his mail delivery route.
