Des Moines man sentenced in 2020 voluntary manslaughter and robbery case

Andrew James Hall, 30, who pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, robbery, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and going armed with intent in a 2020 case, was sentenced to prison Monday.

Hall was charged after officers found the body of Michael Thurman, 41, along the roadside in the 2400 block of East Market Street after 9 p.m. June 27, 2020, while responding to a report of a person down, according to a Des Moines Police Department news release at the time.

Police determined Thurman was shot once in the chest. Hall admitted to robbing the victim and shooting him, according to police.

Hall was sentenced to a total maximum of 50 years, with a mandatory 27 1/2 years to run consecutively with his charges. He is required to submit his DNA and pay $150,000 in restitution.

"I just want to apologize to the family," Hall said during the sentencing. "I didn't mean for this to happen and I wish I could take it back."

Thurman's mother, Sharon Kay (Prewett) Thurman, wrote in a statement read in the courtroom that her life will never be the same and that every day is a struggle.

"My mind is like a spinning wheel and it won't stop," she said.

Amanda Gail Wright, 37, also was charged in relation to Thurman's death. In 2022, Wright pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. She originally was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery but accepted a plea deal with the state.
