Des Moines police ID man killed in head-on collision near Prospect Park

Des Moines police have identified the man killed Friday in a two-vehicle, head-on collision near Prospect Park.

At 12:56 p.m. Friday, emergency personnel were called to the scene of a serious crash at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Prospect Road, according to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department.

A 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix and a 2015 Freightliner semi box truck had collided head-on just south of the intersection, according to the release. The driver of the Pontiac, Lyndell Lamont Brown, 42, of Des Moines, did not survive the crash. Two passengers remain hospitalized with serious injuries and are expected to survive.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

Police say witnesses described the Pontiac as "driving erratically and at a high rate of speed just prior to the crash," according to Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesman for the Des Moines Police Department. Police say the Pontiac had been driving northbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway when it allegedly crossed the center line and crashed into the tractor-trailer.

The Iowa Department of Transportation had reported 292 fatal crashes this year, as of Friday.
